Where to Put the Bed and the Wardrobe in a Bedroom
A bedroom has two large pieces, the bed and the wardrobe, and where they stand decides everything else. Put them on the right walls and the room feels calm and easy to use. Put them on the wrong ones and you end up squeezing past the bed or unable to open a wardrobe door fully.
This guide explains which wall to choose for each piece, how much space to leave around them, and how to check your own bedroom for free before you order.
Start with the bed
The bed is the largest piece, so place it first. Three rules help in almost every bedroom:
- Put the headboard on a solid wall. A wall without a window or a door is the best choice. The longest free wall is usually the right one.
- See the door from the bed, but do not face it directly. Most people sleep better when they can see who enters without lying in line with the door.
- Leave both sides open. A bed pushed against a side wall is hard to make, and one person has to climb over the other.
Avoid placing the bed directly under the AC unit. Cold air blowing on your head all night is uncomfortable, and in the UAE the AC runs most of the year. If there is no other wall, direct the air flap away from the bed.
How much space around the bed
| Where | Space to leave |
|---|---|
| Each side of the bed | at least 60 cm, 70 to 80 cm is more comfortable |
| Foot of the bed to a wall | at least 60 cm |
| Foot of the bed to a wardrobe with hinged doors | about 90 cm or more |
| Foot of the bed to a wardrobe with sliding doors | about 70 cm or more |
The nightstands stand in the space beside the bed, so the bed wall has to take the bed and both nightstands together.
Is your room big enough for a king bed?
A king bed takes a mattress of 180 by 200 cm, but the bed itself is larger. A bed has three sizes you need to know: the headboard, the frame that holds the mattress, and the nightstands beside it. Here are the sizes of our AURA Bedroom Set:
| Piece | Size |
|---|---|
| Mattress | 180 by 200 cm |
| Bed frame | 205 cm wide |
| Headboard | 245 cm wide |
| Whole bed, headboard to foot | 231 cm long |
| Each nightstand | 65 cm wide, 50 cm deep |
| Wardrobe | 260 cm wide, 65 cm deep |
The headboard is wider than the frame, and the nightstands stand in front of the ends of the headboard, right beside the frame. So the nightstands overlap the headboard by 20 cm on each side, and you do not add the headboard and the nightstands together.
The bed wall for this set:
- bed frame: 205 cm
- two nightstands: 65 cm each
- total: 335 cm
So the bed wall should be about 3.4 metres or longer for this king bed with both nightstands. On a shorter wall, use one nightstand.
Now the other direction, when the wardrobe stands opposite the foot of the bed:
- bed with headboard: 231 cm
- space to open the wardrobe doors and stand in front of them: 90 cm
- wardrobe depth: 65 cm
- total: 386 cm
If your room is shorter than about 3.9 metres in that direction, move the wardrobe to a side wall instead. In a room of 450 by 450 cm the whole AURA set fits, with the bed, both nightstands, the dresser and the wardrobe.
Where to put the wardrobe
A wardrobe is usually 60 to 65 cm deep and as tall as the room allows, so it changes how the room feels more than any other piece. Good places for it:
- The wall beside the door. You see the bed when you enter, not the wardrobe, and the wardrobe is close when you come in to change.
- The wall opposite the bed. This works when the room is long enough for the bed, the clearance and the wardrobe together.
- A niche or recess. If the room has one, measure it carefully. The wardrobe has to be a little narrower than the niche to slide in.
Places to avoid: in front of a window, where it blocks daylight, and directly behind the door, where the door cannot open fully.
Check the doors
A hinged wardrobe door needs space to swing open, as wide as the door itself, plus room for you to stand in front of it. Measure this before you decide on the wall. Also check that an open wardrobe door does not hit the bedroom door, the bed or a nightstand.
Mirrored doors
A wardrobe with mirrored doors makes a bedroom look larger and brighter, and it replaces a separate standing mirror. Place it where it reflects the window if you can. Many people prefer not to have a large mirror facing the bed directly, so a side wall is often the better choice.
The dressing table and the rest
Once the bed and the wardrobe are placed, the smaller pieces go into the space that is left:
- A dressing table needs about 60 cm in front of it for the stool and for you to sit.
- Place it near the window if possible. Daylight from the front or the side is the best light for a mirror.
- Keep the way from the door to the bed and to the wardrobe clear, at least 60 cm wide.
A bed with storage
If the room is too small for a large wardrobe, use the bed. A bed with a lift-up base, like the hydraulic storage in the AURA bed, gives you the whole area under the mattress for bedding, luggage and seasonal clothes. It opens upward, so it needs no extra floor space at the sides.
Check your bedroom with Fit My Room
Fit My Room is our free online room planner. It draws your bedroom from above and places the furniture in its real size:
- Open a bedroom set on asbarfurniture.com and press “Will it fit in my room?”
- Type the width and the length of your room in centimetres.
- Place the door and the window where they are in your room.
- The bed is drawn with its real headboard, which is wider than the frame. The nightstands sit beside it and the wardrobe is placed for you.
- Move the pieces to try other walls. The plan marks any piece that needs checking.
- See the total price and send the plan to your family on WhatsApp.
Fit My Room checks the space inside the room. It does not check your entrance or lift. A wardrobe and a king bed are large pieces, so if the way in is narrow, send us the sizes on WhatsApp before you order.
